✅ The Canopus is one of the most famous and iconic buildings of Villa Adriana. It was a magnificent Triclinium, where Emperor Hadrian hosted the most important guests and entertained them with spectacular banquets.

✅ The Triclinium is semicircular, and still partially covered by an “umbrella” dome. It is semicircular, with niches for statues and others for fountains and waterworks. In the center there was the Stibadium, a large triclinium bed in the shape of a crescent, on which the diners lied down. 

✅ It was surrounded by channels where the waterfalls flowed, then there was a central basin connected with the Euripus, a channel in front of the Canopus, over a hundred meters long.

✅ The space in front of the Triclinium also had a small stage, where actors, dancers and musicians entertained the guests with shows and concerts, songs, dances and music. The large dome worked as a sound box, and the acoustics were perfect.

✅ In the center of the Triclinium a long and narrow room opens; it is partially covered by a barrel vault. Here, Emperor Hadrian took his place with the most important guests, in a dominant and safe position, as seen in a reconstruction of the Italian TV Rai2, Voyager.

✅ Its location is the same as that of a Royal Stage in our theaters, where the acoustics were best, and so was the view. From there, in fact, there was a magnificent view of the Euripus and the surrounding gardens.
