‼️ ️ VILLA ADRIANA - THE SUMMER TRICLINIUM OF THE IMPERIAL PALACE

‼️  ️ VILLA ADRIANA - THE SUMMER TRICLINIUM OF THE IMPERIAL PALACE

✅ In the Imperial Palace there there is another Summer Triclinium which is a smaller-scale version of the one in the Canopus, called Serapeum. It has a large half-dome where the bricks that were used to stem the pouring of the cement are still visible.

✅ It has five alternating rectangular and semicircular niches, in which statues were placed. From the niches water jets were springing: the water descended along the steps of a podium and then gathered in a semicircular canal at the base of the wall.

✅ In the center there was a masonry triclinium bed (stibadium) similar to the one of the Canopus, surrounded by two semicircular channels: one on the outside and the other on the inside. They collected the water which then flowed into a central basin.

✅ The recent excavations of the Pablo Olavide University of Seville (Spain) directed by prof. Rafael Hidalgo Prieto, brought to light these structures and also the white marbles that lined the basins and canals. In front of it, another Nymphaeum was discovered, which seems to have a suspended floor above a water basin.

✅ The Summer Triclinium is located near the inner portico of the Imperial Palace, and was meant for the members of the Court who lived there. It was partly damaged by a modern furnace, where the marbles were burned to make lime.

‼️  A miniature Triclinium like the Canopus.
