VILLA ADRIANA - THE MOSAICS OF THE HOSPITALIA, ENDLESS FANTASY

‼️ ️ VILLA ADRIANA - THE MOSAICS OF THE HOSPITALIA, ENDLESS FANTASY

✅ The Hospitalia and the Imperial Triclinium belong to a single building decorated with black and white mosaics. The Hospitalia have a large central corridor, on which ten bedrooms (cubicles) open: each one had three rectangular alcoves for the beds.

✅ The mosaics of the floors in the cubicles have a squared central part with a beautiful and elaborate decoration. The three rectangles of the alcoves, which were partly hidden by the beds, had a simpler decoration.

✅ The central squares have arabesque drawings with vegetal elements, typical of the age of Hadrian, and other elements such as kantharoi, shamrocks, rosettes, bucrania, palmettes: an endless repertoire.

✅ On the walls there are traces of frescoes with a red background and floral decoration. At the end of the main corridor there was a large room with a base for a statue, probably a sacellum. Restoring the mosaic, the preparatory drawing, the sinopia, was found on the cement below.

✅ The black and white mosaics show that the Hospitalia belonged to the group of secondary buildings, meant for high ranking personnel, such as freedmen or praetorians. This is proven by the presence of multi-seat latrines; in the noble buildings, reserved for the emperor and paved with marble opus sectile, the latrines were single-seat.
‼️ Endless mosaic fantasy!
